Sumba Women in Traditional Dress - Waiting to Dance

This is a wonderful photograph depicting the traditional dress of Sumba women at a ritual or ceremony. This was taken in the late 1970s in Waingapu, Sumba during a visit by church dignitaries.

The women are wearing tubular sarongs as well as a full pair of hinggi kombu blankets. Notice, too, their tortoise-shell hair pieces and the large parang (knife) each is holding.
